It is only to your wind up it starts to falter, although slap-up finale rescues they regarding the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero higher issue in life off its incredibly unattractive label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin said “The film movements from the an instant rate, the newest dialogue are advanced and you may characterisations fundamentally energetic. Richard Brody about The brand new Yorker listed “This terse and you can taut film noir try centered on the fresh romantic and you can elite disputes of your own title profile, brand new unlawful mastermind (starred because of the Cock Powell) at the rear of a stylish illegal casino. The newest film’s writer and you can director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess video game, to own mortal bet, ranging from Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) spent some time working during the casino and old an effective corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body language from love and you may threat, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will fashionably assertive pictures (and their political conscience) get this pugnacious yet , detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of the genre.” [ 10 ]

As the plot employs a familiar development, brand new characterizations is new and performances sufficient to help you overbalance. It is mainly a point of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces stylishly while you are an enormous throw out of stars and you can stars offer your typical assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the great absolutely nothing woman exactly who brings out the fresh best in him and you can Ellen Received is the smooth and you will slinky vixen just who gets your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez are oily just like the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does an alternative able trip due to the fact a tired cops inspector whom fundamentally closes the fact. A lot of consuming and you may smoking is completed because of the all the concerned.” [ several ]
